A Streetcar Named Desire - Scene Three Plot Summary
A Streetcar Named Desire - Scene Three Plot Summary The Poker Night Four men (Stanley Kowalski, Mitch, Steve, and Pablo) are playing poker while the ladies (Blanche and Stella) are having an evening out. Playwright Tennessee Williams describes the men as in the physical prime of their life; they drink whiskey and each of their shirts has its own bright, distinct color. Stanleys first line in this scene betrays his aggressiveness: STANLEY: Get yr ass off the table, Mitch. Nothing belongs on a poker table but cards, chips and whiskey. Mitch seems more sensitive than the other men. He considers leaving the poker game because he is concerned about his ailing mother. (An interesting point about Mitch: He is the only unmarried man in the group.) The Ladies Return Stella and Blanche arrive home at around 2:30 am. Intrigued by the gruff man and their poker playing, Blanche asks if she can kibitz (meaning that she wants to spectate and offer commentary and advice about their game). Stanley wont let her. And when his wife suggests that the men quit after one more hand, he roughly slaps her thigh. Steve and Pablo laugh at this. Again, Williams shows us that most men (at least in this play) are crude and hostile, and most women begrudgingly tolerate them. Mitch and Blanche Flirt Blanche briefly encounters Mitch, who is just emerging from the bathroom. She asks Stella if Mitch is a wolf, someone who will take advantage of her emotionally and sexually. Stella doesnt think that he would behave that way, and Blanche begins to wonder about Mitch as a romantic possibility. Mitch excuses himself from the poker table and shares a cigarette with Blanche. MITCH: I guess we strike you as being a pretty rough bunch. BLANCHE: Im very adaptable - to circumstances. She also talks about her career back in her hometown. She states, I have the misfortune of being an English instructor. (Personal note: Since I, too, am an English teacher, I find this line hysterical!) Blanche turns on the radio, hoping to dance with Mitch; however, Stanley (who has become increasingly enraged by Blanche and her distracting ways) throws the radio out the window. All Hell Breaks Loose After Stanley trashes the radio, fast-paced and violent action ensues: Stella calls Stanley a drunk - animal thing.Stanley beats Stella.Blanche screams My sister is going to have a baby! The men restrain Stanley and toss him in the shower.Blanche rushes Stella to the neighbors apartment. Within moments, Stanley, soaking wet and half-drunken. He suddenly realizes that Stella has left him. STELL-LAHHHHH!!!!! In this famous moment, Stanley stumbles out to the street. He begins to call for his wife. When she does not come down to him he begins to shout her name repeatedly. The stages directions indicate that he calls to her with heaven-splitting violence. Touched by her husbands desperate, animalistic need for her, Stella walks down to him. According to the stage directions, They come together with low, animal moans. He falls to his knees on the steps and presses his face to her belly. In many ways, this moment is the antithesis to the famed balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. Instead of Romeo (as stage tradition holds) climbing up to his love, Stella walks down to her man. Instead of a romantic lead spouting eloquent poetry, we have Stanley Kowalski yelling at the top of his lungs, repeating only one name, like an ill-tempered boy calling for his mother. After Stanley carries Stella into their home, Blanche meets Mitch once again. He tells her not to worry, that the pair truly cares about each other. Blanche marvels about the confusing nature of the world and thanks Mitch for his kindness.

We Dont Choose a Life, We Live It Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
We Dont Choose a Life, We Live It - Essay Example In fact, by living our life, we get to make decisions; decisions that shape and change our lives in ways we never knew existed, while at the same time we get to know and embrace our strengths, weaknesses and differences. Whether we believe that the life we have comes from God or we evolved and Mother Nature decides where we land, one thing is for sure, that none of us has control of that life, we only get to live it. We will also agree that no one has a map of how to live this life; it is like a giant complicated maze that we are all trying to break out from. In real life, it is like everybody is a tourist, we either are trying to arrive at a different place in our life we have never been or just looking for new experience. How however we go about accomplishing our new destinations and creating memories, is what separates us; it is part of what makes us different in the end. There are two classes of persons in life, those that follow the rules and get through life how they are told t o and there are those individuals that like taking risks, trying out things that others are not willing to. Tourists when visiting new places, they have guides who show them where to go and narrates everything they think is important for them to know. But if that is the best way to get through life is another issue that needs debating. Again at the same, also drifting from the group mentality and visiting places on your own and experiencing life and new situations differently is another debatable way to get through life. As a tourist myself, I am of the view that always following what the guide says and being content with it is not the best way to experience new places. For one to get the full experience of a place, they need to meet the locals, talk to them. Let them give you an account of how they live. What makes them different and behave in a certain manner thus that is the only way to travel and get a true tourist who not only takes photographs and memories, but also experience s. This is exactly at the end of the day, shapes our lives, the way we think and interact with one another. It is true that the universe is full of different sceneries different from where we live, that is a fact. It is also true that these places have different people living in them from us. Just visiting the place and getting the history from it is not as important as meeting the people who live there. The world is developing so is the technology, this sis seen today where we have cyber space in place. Places where virtually people can visit new places and act as if they are touring real places. To imagine you can achieve all this right from the comfort of your home is what makes it even more exciting. As much as this is an important step in technological development, in my view, it curtails the ability for individuals to shape how they see the world and how other people think. Although it is a very exciting idea, it cannot compare to the real life changing experience derived from one on one dialogue with locals from different regions of the globe. People become involved in tourism for many reasons, it can be leisure, which can be substituted by cyber space virtual tourism, and it could also be for business purposes. But one thing stands out, that an effect is produced, either on the locals visited or the economy of the host nation. Recently, there are issues which have come up in the tourism sector. One of them is sustainable tourism which involves management of all resources in such a manner that we preserve cultural integrity for instance while in pursuit of economic

Book Review - Essay Example One such example is of Texas which is under the territory of United States of America. It is analyzed that around 3.8 million people living in Texas were below the poverty line specified by the government in 2006. And if the previous records are analyzed it can be said that the rate of poverty is going to increase further in the recent years. The book that this essay would analyze is Poverty and Discrimination by Kevin Lang an economist. Poverty and discrimination are two broad topics which are usually not portrayed correct and are not supported enough by the evidence given. However in the book Poverty and Discrimination by Kevin Lang he explains using the broad points on both poverty and discrimination. The books gives many researches and analysis which help the readers to understand what the topics of discrimination and poverty are to this world. He further examines the level of poverty prevailing in this world with the help of his methods and tells how these two subjects are being handled by different governments of this world. Poverty in this world is created by several reasons and in this book Kevin Lang puts out several of these reasons which cause poverty. The determinants of poverty particularly in the United States are emphasized with reference to the discrimination taking place in the States. He particularly points out discrimination amongst black taking place in the United States of America and how it cau ses poverty amongst the different races. He also provides an overview about labor market and how the labor market discriminates between these different races. Here he particularly points out at the education level that the black receive and the level which the whites receive. The vast difference in both these classes causes discrimination to occur. The book gives out policies which have been implemented all over the world regarding poverty and discrimination. And he further analyzes these policies in regard to

Benefits Of Staying With Parents After Marriage Young People Essay
Benefits Of Staying With Parents After Marriage Young People Essay Every time you get off work and walk into that the community where your home is, you must overhear a lot of juicy news while you walk past those full-time housewives, sitting together and gossiping what happened recently in their neighbors home. It is true that the contents are mostly about the tough relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Even though you may not be interested about this, you cannot deny those things have happened to you, or, unfortunately, you are coping with it now. Well, to be honest, that is also the main reason why so many couples choose to live away from their parents-in-law. But, is that the right way to solve all the problems? And is that a good choice? For me, actually, to solve all these complicated problems are just staying with parents after married. Living with parents can make the relationship more stable, benefit childrens education and slow down the process of aging of parents. Firstly, living with parents leads to a happy marriage. I think it is not a solution but an excuse that living away from parents is for a harmony relationship with parents-in-law. Mostly, this kind of decision is made by young couples. There are some brides who insist on not living with her husbands parents. They dont want to change their own, as well as protecting their own living space from parents. Too many of them have already tired of the fierce competition from their career. All they want to do is just go back home to have a good rest instead of racking their brains to do something to please parents. Therefore getting away from parents-in-law can make it easier. That is what they say distance helps. We can see so many words, such as we, own, want. They just turn out to be nothing but selfish. Is that so bad as the couples describeà ¼Ã
¸ How can young people say that they are too tired to make effort to make an improvement? Family is the most important thing to everyone. People who care about us most are parents. Most of us can bear with the defects of others. However, when it comes to parents, they behave differently. It is like putting the cart before the horse. It is said that the divorce rate in China has increased by almost 20% over past year, with 1.4m couples filing for separation during 2007 (see the news published on Friday, 25 January 2008). It is also said that since Chinas one-child policy was established, in 1973. The number of people getting divorce has quadrupled. That policy has produced a generation of adults focused on their own needs and unable to sustain a relationship. To build a harmonious family relationship, living with parents-in-law can make sense, because the older generation can deal with problems much better. The new couples will learn from them, learn to compromise and cooperate to make a marriage work well. Obviously, the relationship will be more stable. Secondly, it can benefit childrens education to live with parents. So busy the young couples are, it is almost impossible for them to set aside more time for their own children. As a result, these children are sent to their grandparents. However, grandparents always spoil children more than childrens parents do, which cause the children to be selfish and moody. Moreover, for the lack of time with parents, it can be even worse after children grow up. Parents will not be able to communicate with their children well when there has been a barrier between them. If children can live with both parents and grandparents, doting grandparents will have the awareness of being strict to children, and children will enjoy more time with their parents. Being around by eldership and their children, couples will think twice before doing anything, which, at the same time, avoids being unfaithful to their partner. Growing up in a family with such a harmonious atmosphere, these children will be more like ly to get a happy marriage contributed by easygoing, optimistic, and responsible personalities. The last but not least, living with parents can also slow down their aging process. The rapid decrease in the birth rate, combined with improving life expectancy, has led to an increasing proportion of elderly people and an increase in the ratio between elderly parents and adult children. In China, the percentage of the population over the age of 65 years was 5 percent in 1982 and now stands at 7.5percent but is expected to rise to more than 15 percent by 2025(The Effect of Chinas One-Child Family Policy after 25 Years Therese Hesketh, Ph.D., Li Lu, M.D., and Zhu Wei Xing, M.P.H.). The mental health of senior is increasingly important. Company from families is the best doctor for them avoiding the feeling of loneliness. Living together can not only decrease the speed of being slow reaction but also let the young couples have a good knowledge of their parents condition. As a result, parents will gain a longer lifespan which is also a gift to couples. In return, taking good care of the old parents is a good example to their children. They will learn that from young couples on their own. Parents are always the best teacher to children. Even so, many newly married wives still get along well with their parents-in-law. That is reasonable. They dont have same living habit. Everyone in family will adjust themselves to the new situation. It must need time. Everybody knows that family is a cell of the whole society. We are obliged to make it work well. Marriage is not only about couples themselves. Trust me, rainbow comes after storm. A better understanding can be got after living with parents. Delegation is the assignment Essay
Delegation is the assignment of responsibility or authority to another person (normally from a manager to a subordinate) to carry out specific activities. It is one of the core concepts of management leadership. However, the person who delegated the work remains accountable for the outcome of the delegated work. Delegation empowers a subordinate to make decisions, i.e. it is a shift of decision-making authority from one organizational level to a lower one. delegation is good and can save money and time, help in building skills, and motivate people. Poor delegation, on the other hand, might cause frustration and confusion to all the involved parties. Some agents however do not favour a delegation and consider the power of making a decision rather burdensome. Delegation is about entrusting someone else to do parts of your job A manager alone cannot perform all the tasks assigned to him. In order to meet the targets, the manager should delegate authority managers could greatly reduce their stress by practicing a critical management skill ââ¬â delegation. Delegation is one of the most important management skills. Good delegation saves the time, develops the subordinates, fosters a successor and motivates. Poor delegation will cause frustration, de-motivation and failures to achieve the task or purpose. Although it is easy to recognize the benefits that accrue from delegation, many managers still resist actually doing it The most important step for delegation is to recognize the common barriers to delegation. These barriers can come from supervisors (leaders), the team members, or the situation. 1. Barriers Related to Supervisor The biggest barrier to effective delegation often comes from supervisors. They must overcome their anxieties about giving others responsibilities in order to gain the benefits of effective delegation. In general, 6 barriers are related with the Barriers to delegation of authority from subordinate side would mean, the difficulties or problems faced by subordinate in accepting and using the authority delegated. These barriers include the following. â⬠¢Authority delegated in theory, but means of exercising the authority not made available. For example, a subordinate may be delegated the authority to buy computer required in his department, but the purchase department drags feetà on actually buying the computer. The worst case of this type may happen when, for example, a project manager is given considerable authority for executing a project, but the project itself is not sanctioned. â⬠¢The subordinate may not have authority over some of the people who must contribute to implementation of decisions made. â⬠¢Required information for making decision may not be available. Many a times other supporting facilities like staff and office space may also be inadequate. â⬠¢The subordinate may be already overburdened wit h work. â⬠¢When a subordinate id delegated authority which elevates his position above those equal or senior to him this may be resented by them. â⬠¢Subordinate may lack the skill and knowledge for effective decision making. â⬠¢Limits of authority delegated not defined clearly. Generally delegation of authority with supposedly no limits is not very effective. â⬠¢The subordinate has no motivation for accepting the additional responsibility that goes with the authority. â⬠¢Authority delegated without matching responsibilities. This can make delegation directionless for the subordinate.

African American English Essay
When it comes to arguing whether African-American English/Ebonics, enriches or contaminates Standard English, most of the negative tone that African-American English gets comes from an educational stand point. One argument teachers, who do not believe in using Ebonics, use is that there is no place for Ebonics in the class room. Stacey Thomas, in her article ââ¬Å"Ebonics and the African-American Student: Why Ebonics Has a Place in the Classroomâ⬠writes that teachers can use Ebonics as a way to facilitate the learning of Standard English to African American students. In order to use Ebonics as a vehicle to teaching Standard English, teachers must be bilingual; meaning they most know both Ebonics and Standard English. Thomas states, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦once students see and comprehend the differences between Standard English and Ebonics in terms of structure and syntax, they display a great[er] understanding in Standard English, and as a result, decrease their use of Ebonicsâ⬠Ebonics and the African-American Student (6). In other words, by working on activities where students have to compare both Ebonics and Standard English, studentsââ¬â¢ knowledge of Standard English is increasing and their use of Ebonics is decreasing. Another arguments teachers use against Ebonics is that it obstructs the academic potential of African-Americans. Thomas goes further on by stating the Oakland school board Ebonics issue. In 1996, the Oakland, California school board started using Ebonics as a way to teach to African American students whose grades were lower than other ethnicities. As a result of using Ebonics as a vehicle to teaching, Thomas states, ââ¬Å"the Oakland School Districtââ¬â¢s use of Ebonics in the classroom, [and] the studentsââ¬â¢ performance in reading and wring has improvedâ⬠¦ the students have tested above district averages there was a in reading and writing skillsâ⬠Ebonics and the African-American Student (6). So not only is the teaching of Ebonics facilitating school work for students, but it is also increasing their grades. Ebonics, a language that is stereotyped as ignorant and uneducated, is now becoming a great tool for educating students.

A Quick Looks Shows Childrens Toys are Gender Specific Essay
Gender roles in toys are overwhelmingly obvious. The breakdown has not changed in so many years that we all comply with and follow without question. Taking a trip to the local Toys R Us store showed me just how obvious the line was drawn for the sexes, showing a specific division of the two. The stores layout clearly establishes the line between girlââ¬â¢s toys and boys toys. There are very few isles that will intermingle within the sexes. For this project I selected the following age groups; infant, preschool and school age with a focus on girls toys. Infant toys were the one age group where the genders comingled. My first selection is the Laugh and Learn Love to Play Sis. This plush dog displays dominate colors of pink and purple, has aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Preschool children toys start to really draw a deep line between boy and girl toys. The first toy I found was the Baby Alive. This pink package certainly shows their target audience as female. Hasbro provides three races of these babies, Hispanic, Caucasian and African American. This toy line is marketing to all the little girls that want to be a mommy already. The research of Becky Francis (2010) in ââ¬Å"Gender, Toys and Learningâ⬠describe the effect of toys towards a childââ¬â¢s development by gender bias, she shows that girls are given more nurturing toys . The Baby Alive doll shows this bias. These toys are specifically marketed to girls of all races to learn how to take care of a child. Care Bear is another preschool girl specific toy. These plush toys come in many colors, but the only ones on the shelf that day were pink purple. The bears are advertised as cuddly, sweet and made for hugging, which can be targeted to any gender but were only be found in the girl section. I found single isle that had any that can cross over to either gender. First there are the Monster University plush toys, Art Squishy. Both are purple and non suggestive to gender. The toys were advertised to be additions for the movie that came out in 2013. This movie was enjoyed by all ages, genders and races.
